Santos Laguna plays a very aggressive style of football using a 2-5-3. This formation is built to play with extreme verticality and a constant high press. The intention is to keep the ball in the opponent's half and use massive numbers in the attacking third to create chances.

E. Aguirre operates as the goalkeeper to command the area. The defensive unit is a narrow defensive block consisting of L. Gamboa and D. Gonzalez. These two central defenders must act as ball playing defenders who can step up to intercept passes while also being ready to cover the vast space left behind a high line. Since there are no traditional full backs, they must hold the line carefully and win the second ball to prevent counter attacks.

In the middle, G. Lodico acts as the central link to connect the defensive and attacking lines. He is supported by a central pairing where A. Gutiérrez and E. Gutierrez work to shield the defence and win the second ball. To bridge the gap between the center and the wings, E. Aguirre and J. Sanchez operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders. This three man midfield allows the team to recycle possession and drive forward with the ball into the final third.

The front line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. F. Pardo leads the line as the striker, looking to run in behind or hold up the ball. M. Cuevas and F. Sanchez play as wide wingers who aim to get to the byline and whip it in or cut inside to attack the near post. This front three presses from the front to force a long ball and create constant pressure on the opposition back line.

One major advantage for Santos Laguna is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. Having five midfielders and three forwards means they can quickly win it back high up the pitch. They also create numerical superiority in the middle, which helps them play through the lines and find space. This makes their speed of transition very dangerous when they hit in behind.

This 2-5-3 formation relies on heavy pressure and attacking dominance. It is most effective when facing a team that sits deep and allows the team to control the ball in the final third.
