Tottenham Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Udogie · Porro · van de Ven · van Hecke · Kulusevski · Maddison · Kudus · Simons · Tonali · Bentancur · VicarioTottenham aims to dominate the pitch through high intensity pressing and verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and quickly progress through the thirds. By committing so many bodies forward, the team seeks to overwhelm the opposition in their own half and control the tempo of the game through constant pressure.
Vicario plays behind a very narrow defensive unit. The two central defenders, van de Ven and van Hecke, act as a high line to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch. van de Ven uses his recovery speed to cover the space behind when the team pushes forward. They must remain compact to prevent runners from getting between them, as the lack of full backs means they rely on the midfield to protect the central areas.
The midfield is the engine of this Tottenham lineup, operating in a heavy five man block. Porro and Udogie act as deep midfielders who help build out from the back and provide width. Bentancur and Tonali occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, with Bentancur often tasked to recycle possession and keep the ball moving. Maddison plays as an attacking ten behind the front three, looking to play through the lines and find pockets of space between the opposition lines.
In the final third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Kulusevski plays as the lone striker, often working to hold up the ball and link up play with the others. Simons plays as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and create chances, while Kudus occupies the right side to provide directness. These three forwards press the opposition back line relentlessly to force a long ball or a mistake.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its heavy presence in the middle of the pitch. Tottenham creates numerical superiority in the central areas, making it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. The combination of Maddison in the hole and the wide movements of Simons and Kudus allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations frequently.
This 2-5-3 setup is designed for total dominance and aggressive hunting of the ball. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a deep block or face an opponent that struggles to play out from the back.
