Senegal National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
M. DIAW · K. DIATTA · P.I. CISS · NIAKHATÉ · JAKOBS (M. DIOUF) · I. GUEYE (B.S. NDIAYE) · PAPE GUEYE (L. CAMARA) · I. NDIAYE (MBAYE) · H. DIARRA (MATAR SARR) · MANÉ (N. JACKSON) · I. SARRSenegal relies on a high press and quick transitions to disrupt opponents using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and strike fast before the opposition can settle. The team looks to use the width of the pitch while maintaining a compact defensive unit that is hard to break down.
M. DIAW sits between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit functions as a back five, utilizing three central defenders to hold the line. I. GUEYE acts as a dominant presence in the air while NIAKHATÉ provides cover to sweep behind a high line. P.I. CISS helps protect the space between the center and the flank. The wide defenders, K. DIATTA and JAKOBS, act as attacking wing backs to provide width. They push up to support the attack but must track back to defend against counter attacks.
The midfield consists of a double pivot designed to control the center of the pitch. PAPE GUEYE presses aggressively to win the ball high and uses his energy to disrupt play. H. DIARRA works alongside him to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive the ball from the back. This pair must stay close together to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the center. They are responsible for recycling possession and ensuring the team maintains control during transitions.
Senegal employs three attackers to stretch the defence. I. SARR leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to pin the last defender and make runs in behind. On the flanks, MANÉ operates as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create goal scoring opportunities with his dribbling style and passing range. I. NDIAYE provides width on the right side, often looking to get to the byline and whip it in. This front three works together to press the opposition back line and create combinations in tight spaces.
This formation offers great strength in transition and the ability to create wide overloads. When K. DIATTA and JAKOBS push forward, they create numerical superiority on the flanks. Senegal can also maintain great compactness when defending in a mid-block, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines.
The 5-2-3 formation allows Senegal to be both defensively solid and dangerous on the break. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
