Portugal National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Diogo Costa · Quenda · Dias · Inacio · T.Araújo · N.Mendes · Vitinha · J.Neves · Trincao · Mora · Youssef ChermitiPortugal seeks to control matches through high pressing and quick transitions using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the pitch by squeezing the space in the middle and creating numbers in the final third. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and move forward with pace to catch the opposition out of position.
Diogo Costa acts as the starting point for building out from the back. In front of him, a back three consists of Inacio, Dias, and T.Araújo. Inacio and T.Araújo play as wide centre-backs to cover the channels, while Dias acts as the central defender to win the header and lead the line. This defensive unit can shift to a mid-block or push up to set the offside trap. The defenders must be ready to drop into a low block if the team loses control of the game.
The midfield operates with a central pairing of J.Neves and Vitinha. J.Neves serves as the primary shield for the defence, working to intercept passes and win the second ball. Vitinha connects the lines, often dropping deep to receive the ball and then driving forward to progress through the thirds. On the flanks, N.Mendes and Quenda act as wing backs to provide width. N.Mendes pushes up to overlap the winger, while Quenda carries the ball forward to stretch the defence and provide crosses.
The attack is led by Youssef Chermiti as a lone striker who must hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. He is supported by Mora on the left and Trincao on the right. Mora and Trincao operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central overloads. These attackers press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The front three look to play one-two combinations to split the defence with a through ball or find space for runs in behind.
Portugal gains a significant advantage through wide overloads when N.Mendes and Quenda push high. This formation also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The presence of Vitinha and J.Neves provides numerical superiority in midfield during central combat.
This 3-4-3 formation is built for a team that wants to dictate the tempo through aggressive pressing and wide play. It is best suited for games against opponents who struggle to deal with high intensity and rapid changes in direction.
