Starting Lineup

SK Rapid plays with an aggressive intent using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup relies on dominating the central areas to drive the team forward and maintain control. The team seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and use their central density to break the lines through quick, vertical passing.

Hedl sits in goal as the primary shot stopper. In front of him, Raux Yao and Schöller form a narrow defensive block of two central defenders. These two must play with a high line to squeeze the space and intercept any direct passes before they reach the strikers. Raux Yao and Schöller need to be ready to cover wide areas if the midfield is bypassed, often needing to step up and sweep behind the high line to prevent long balls from turning into goal scoring chances.

The midfield is a five man unit that provides the link between defense and attack. Bolla and Oswald work as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Gulliksen and Seidl operate in the half spaces, acting as two eights who can carry the ball forward or drop back to protect the central defenders. Y. Demir plays as an attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space between the lines to provide the final pass. This group works to compress the midfield and win the second ball to keep the pressure on.

In the attacking phase, the team utilizes three forwards to pin the last defender and stretch the opposition. Kara acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of the oncoming midfielders. Dahl and Wurmbrand occupy the wide positions, acting as wingers who can cut inside to shoot or spread wide to whip it in. The formation is designed to create combinations in tight spaces and allow the attackers to use their speed to hit in behind on the transition.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By crowding the middle, SK Rapid can easily intercept passes and control the tempo of the game. The team also benefits from the ability to press in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking ten to trigger a press from the front. This forces the opposition to play long balls which can be easily managed by the defenders.

The 2-5-3 formation is a brave lineup that prioritizes attacking numbers over defensive security. It works best against opponents that struggle to manage pressure in their own half or teams that cannot bypass a heavy midfield press.
