Starting Lineup

Hoffenheim is looking to dominate the ball with a very aggressive 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to choke the opposition by packing the central areas and winning the ball back high up the pitch. The focus is on extreme central control and rapid ball movement to overwhelm the middle of the park.

Baumann stays between the posts to manage the defense. The back line is just a two man unit consisting of Hajdari and Hranac. Hajdari needs to win the header and be dominant in the air, while Hranac must stay alert to cover the space left by the high line. Because there are so few defenders, the duo must push up high to squeeze the space and force the opponent to go direct.

The midfield is the engine of this Hoffenheim side, utilizing a massive six man block. Prass, Avdullahu, and Wimmer form a deep trio to shield the two central defenders and win the second ball. These three work to recycle possession and move the ball forward to the next line. In front of them, De Cat, Burger, and Kramaric operate as an attacking trio. Kramaric is able to drop into spaces and connect the deep midfielders with the front two. This lineup allows the team to play short from the back and progress through the thirds with ease.

Up front, the team employs two forwards in a partnership with Asllani and Hlozek. They do not spread wide to hug the touchline but instead stay narrow to stay close to the midfield. Asllani works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the teammates arriving late into the box. Hlozek looks to exploit the space and make runs in behind the defense. The attack is built through quick combinations in tight spaces, using the massive midfield to supply the strikers.

A primary advantage is the incredible numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. This allows the team to control the tempo and constantly find a way to play through the lines. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with the six midfielders and two strikers triggering a press to win the ball in the final third.

This formation is a bold attempt to squeeze the game into the central channel through sheer volume. It is best suited for games where Hoffenheim can exploit an opponent that lacks the speed to hit them in behind on the transition.
