AEK Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Gyokeres · Havertz · Saka · Rice · Gabriel · Saliba · Timber · Calafiori · Raya · Martinelli · OdegaardAEK seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike with immense verticality through a 4-2-4. This formation is built to play with heavy offensive pressure and quick transitions to punish the opposition. The lineup aims to stretch the defence by keeping players high and wide to create massive spaces between the lines.
Raya operates between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back four sits in a high line to squeeze the space in the middle of the park. Saliba and Gabriel act as the central defenders, where Saliba uses his recovery speed to cover space while Gabriel provides aerial strength. Timber pushes forward to provide width, while Calafiori acts as an attacking full back to help build play from the back. This unit must stay compact to avoid being caught by long balls.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide balance. Rice acts as the primary shield for the defence, using his high pressing intensity to win the ball in the middle third. Odegaard connects the defensive and attacking lines by finding pockets of space and playing through the lines. Together, Rice and Odegaard must work to control the tempo and prevent the opponent from playing through the centre.
A massive four-man front line is used to pin the last defender. Havertz and Gyokeres operate as a two-man partnership in the middle, where Havertz often drops deep to link up play. Saka stays wide on the right to isolate the opposition full back, while Martinelli cuts inside from the left to attack the box. This attacking group is designed to create runs in behind and deliver crosses from wide areas to overwhelm the box.
This AEK lineup offers significant speed of transition when winning the ball. The team can create wide overloads by having Timber and Saka occupy the same flank. They also possess the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
The 4-2-4 is a high risk, high reward formation focused on overwhelming the opponent in the final third. It is best suited for games where AEK needs to chase a result against a team that sits deep in a low block.
