Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
João Pedro (ST./CF./CAM.) · Yildiz (CAM.) · Scott (CM./CDM.) · Caicedo (CDM./CB.) · Colwill (CB.LB.) · Lacroix (CB./RB.) · F.Conceicão (RW.) · Sanchez (GK.) · Palmer (CAM./RAM.) · Rafael Leão (LW.) · Wharton (CM./CB.)Chelsea aims to play a direct and aggressive game using a 5-3-2. This formation is built to defend in a mid-block and look for quick vertical passes to the forwards. The team focuses on winning the ball and hitting opponents in transition to catch them out of position.
Sanchez stays between the posts to organize the back line. The formation features a back five with Scott holding the middle while Wharton and Caicedo play as the wide centre-backs. Wharton and Caicedo step up to intercept passes and cover for the wing backs to prevent through balls. Colwill and Lacroix act as attacking wing backs to spread the pitch wide. Scott acts as a ball playing defender to help move the ball out from the back. This unit works together to hold a narrow defensive block and deny the turn to opposition attackers.
Yildiz acts as the single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. He works to win the second ball and distribute it to the more advanced players. João Pedro connects the lines by driving forward with the ball and moving into half spaces. Palmer works in the right half space to use his passing range to break the line and arrive late into the box. The midfield trio works to compress the space and win the ball back high up the pitch.
The front line uses a partnership of Rafael Leão and F.Conceicão. Rafael Leão uses his dribbling and pace to carry the ball forward and pull wide to isolate defenders. F.Conceicão works to find runs in behind and attack the far post to stretch the opposition. Attacks are built through the wing backs who overlap to deliver crosses and cutbacks from the byline. These forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
One advantage for Chelsea is the ability to create wide overloads when Colwill and Lacroix push high. This allows the team to stretch the defence and isolate wide players in one on one situations. The formation also offers great speed of transition once the ball is won in the middle. Players can quickly switch play to the wings to catch the opponent off balance.
This 5-3-2 is a solid way to play against teams that want to keep the ball. It is best suited for counter attacking against opponents who play a high line.
