Starting Lineup

G. RAMOS (9) · PULISIC (11) · ALEXIS (56) · RABIOT (12) · PAVLOVIĆ (31) · GILA (34) · EDERSON (8) · STONES (5) · ARAÚJO (20) · FODEN (10) · MAIGNAN (16)

Milan focuses on a high press and rapid transitions using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. By using a heavy pressing system, the team seeks to control the tempo through verticality and speed rather than long periods of sideways passing.

MAIGNAN operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three with GILA as the right centre-back and PAVLOVIĆ as the left centre-back. STONES plays as the central defender, acting as a ball playing defender who can step into midfield to create an extra man. This trio maintains a high line to squeeze the space, with GILA and PAVLOVIĆ ready to cover the channels if the opposition attempts to run in behind.

In the middle of the pitch, Milan uses a four man midfield to control the width and depth. RABIOT and EDERSON act as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. RABIOT provides energy to press aggressively in the center, while EDERSON looks to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. On the flanks, ARAÚJO and ALEXIS act as wing backs who provide width, pushing high to overlap the attackers and stretch the defence.

The attacking front three consists of three attackers across the front. PULISIC plays as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to find space for shots or through balls. FODEN operates on the right side, also looking to cut inside and link up with the midfield. G. RAMOS acts as the lone striker, playing as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition build up and hold up the ball for the runners behind.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through wide overloads. When ARAÚJO or ALEXIS push forward, they create two on one situations against opposition full backs. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the wing backs to trap the ball near the opponent's goal. This high intensity makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back.

AC Milan relies on this aggressive 3-4-3 to dominate high pressing games. This formation is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play under pressure and leave space behind their defensive line.
