Starting Lineup

MELENDEZ · CHUMPITAZ · DIAZ · SOLANO · VELASQUEZ · CUETO · CUBILLAS · FARFAN · JOYA · GUERRERO · GALLESE

Peru relies on a defensive platform to launch quick attacks, using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built for a team that wants to stay hard to beat and hit opponents on the break using vertical play.

GALLESE guards the goal as the final line of defense. The back line consists of a back five where VELASQUEZ sits in the middle to anchor the unit. CHUMPITAZ and MELENDEZ play as the left and right centre-backs to win headers and cover the space. SOLANO and DIAZ act as attacking wing backs to provide width. When the wing backs push forward, the three central defenders must hold the line and shift to cover the wide areas.

The midfield works with a two-man central pairing. CUETO and CUBILLAS occupy the middle to connect the defense and the attack. CUETO tries to find the forwards with passes through the lines, while CUBILLAS works to win the second ball and shield the defense. These two must press in a mid-block to stop the opposition from playing through the middle. They help recycle possession before looking to play quickly forward or switch play to the wings.

In the attacking phase, Peru uses three players across the front. GUERRERO acts as a target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and find his teammates. FARFAN and JOYA operate as wide attackers to stretch the defense. FARFAN uses his pace to run in behind, while JOYA looks to cut inside and create chances. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball, creating space for the wing backs to overlap and deliver crosses.

A major strength of this Peru lineup is the compactness when defending in a low block. The back five makes it hard for opponents to break the line or find gaps in the middle. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads as SOLANO and DIAZ move up the pitch. The team is also capable of a high speed of transition once they win the ball back and hit in behind on the transition.

This 5-2-3 formation is built to absorb pressure and strike with speed. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that dominate possession.
