This lineup is built to hunt for goals by crowding the attacking third and using high intensity to unsettle the opponent. The goal is to use the front four to stretch the defence and create constant pressure.
Pavlenka starts the build up from the back and manages the defensive line. The team uses a flat back four where Taylor and Kenny occupy the full back positions. On the left, Taylor works to overlap the winger, while Kenny holds the line on the right. In the centre, Michailidis and Elustondo act as the central defenders to defend zonally and win the second ball. They must stay compact to cover the space behind the midfield when the team pushes up.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to manage the centre of the pitch. Camara and Zafeiris occupy the two central roles to shield the defence. While Camara focuses on his ability to carry the ball forward into the half spaces, Zafeiris works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They must be ready to intercept play and press in a mid-block to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. This pairing is vital to recycle possession and ensure the team does not get bypassed in transition.
In the attacking third, the team deploys four players across the front line. Taison and Zivkovic act as inverted wingers who cut inside to hunt for goals. They are supported by a partnership of two forwards in Konstantelias and Mythou. The front four aims to press from the front to force the opposition into mistakes. These players look to attack in combinations, using the wide players to stretch the defence before the central strikers arrive late into the box.
This formation offers several tactical advantages, most notably the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The sheer number of players in the final third makes it hard for opponents to play out from the back. Additionally, the speed of transition is a key asset for PAOK, as the four forwards can break quickly once the midfield wins the ball. Such speed allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations very effectively.
The 4-2-4 formation is a heavy attacking system designed to dominate through sheer numbers. It is best suited for games where the team wants to pin the opponent in their own half and play a high press.
