Ghana National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
ATI ZIGI · SENAYA (A. SEIDU) · LUCKASSEN · OPOKU · MENSAH · PARTEY · SIBO (OWUSU) · YIRENKYI (KWABENA ADU) · I. WILLIAMS (FATAWU ISSAHAKU) · SEMENYO · J. AYEW (NUAMAH)Ghana focuses on a defensive solidity and quick transitions using a 5-4-1. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting teams on the break. By using a low block, the team aims to congest the central areas and make it difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
At the back, ATI ZIGI guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit. The back five consists of a central trio of PARTEY, OPOKU, and LUCKASSEN. PARTEY acts as the central anchor, while LUCKASSEN and OPOKU provide cover and battle for headers. The wing backs, SENAYA on the right and MENSAH on the left, are tasked with providing width and tracking back to form a flat defensive line when the team is under pressure. This group works to maintain a compact shape and deny the turn to any oncoming attackers.
The midfield operates as a flat four to protect the defensive line. SIBO and YIRENKYI form a double pivot to shield the defense, with SIBO acting as a ball winner to intercept passes. In front of them, SEMENYO and I. WILLIAMS occupy the wide areas of the midfield. SEMENYO plays as a left attacking midfielder who can drive forward, while I. WILLIAMS operates on the right to provide service. This midfield block stays narrow to force the play wide and win the second ball.
Ghana employs a lone striker in J. AYEW to lead the line. J. AYEW acts as a target man, able to hold up the ball and wait for support. The team builds attacks by looking for the wing backs, SENAYA and MENSAH, to provide width or by playing direct to the striker. The wingers, SEMENYO and I. WILLIAMS, look to support the striker through runs in behind or by stretching the defense. The goal is to move the ball quickly from the defensive block to the attacking third in transition.
A major tactical advantage of this 5-4-1 is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard to find gaps between the lines. Ghana can also use the roles of SENAYA and MENSAH to create wide overloads when they transition into attack. The presence of a strong double pivot with SIBO and YIRENKYI allows the team to protect the center and transition with pace.
This formation is designed to frustrate superior possession sides by denying them space in the final third. It is best suited for away matches where the team needs to absorb pressure and rely on the individual quality of J. AYEW to score.
