The midfield operates as a double pivot to connect the defence to the attack. NMECHA and JOBE are responsible for shielding the defence and recycling possession. NMECHA works to carry the ball forward into the half spaces, while JOBE aims to intercept passes and win the second ball in the middle of the park. They must be ready to track back and cover the space left by the full backs to prevent being outnumbered on the break.

A heavy attacking presence is maintained with four players across the front. SANCHO and EL MALA act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chaos. SANCHO uses his dribbling style to beat defenders and pull wide. KARETSAS and VLAHOVIC work as a partnership in the middle. VLAHOVIC is a physical striker who can hold up the ball and find the feet of his partner when needed. They press from the front to force a long ball and win the ball back quickly.

A major advantage for Borussia Dortmund is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to squeeze the space. This puts immense pressure on the opposition goalkeeper and defenders. The formation also offers numerical superiority in the final third.
