This lineup aims to squeeze the space in the opposition half and use quick ball movement to break the lines. The goal is to dominate the ball and maintain a high defensive line to keep the team compact.
David Raya acts as the goalkeeper, playing a key role in playing short from the back to start attacks. The defense functions as a flat back four where William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães act as the central duo. Saliba provides aerial strength and composure while Gabriel is dominant in the air. Ben White and Jurrien Timber operate as the full backs, with Ben White often tucking in to help the central defenders. Riccardo Calafiori or Alejandro Hincapié provide depth at left back to help the team build out from the back.
The midfield uses a single pivot to anchor the center of the pitch. Martin Zubimendi or Bruno Guimarães sits in the holding role to shield the defense and win the second ball. Ahead of them, Martin Ødegaard operates in the right central midfield role, using his passing range to find teammates in dangerous areas. Declan Rice or Mikel Merino occupy the left central midfield position to provide energy and help the team win possession. These players connect the defense to the attack by recycling possession and moving the ball quickly between the lines.
Arsenal attacks with three players across the front line to stretch the defence. Bukayo Saka or Noni Madueke play on the right wing, while Bradley Barcola or Eberechi Eze occupy the left wing. The forwards often cut inside to create more central presence. Kai Havertz or Viktor Gyökeres leads the line as the lone striker, often acting as a link to the midfielders. The wingers look to get to the byline or pull wide to deliver crosses, while the striker works to hold up the ball and allow others to arrive late into the box.
One major strength for Arsenal is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opposition. This formation also allows for numerical superiority in midfield when the full backs push up to support the attack. The team can also use the width of the pitch to isolate wide players in one on one situations, making them difficult to mark.
This 4-3-3 formation is designed for teams that want to dictate the tempo through high ball retention and intense pressing. It is most effective against opponents who struggle to play under pressure and leave space behind their midfield.
