Serbia aims to play a direct and aggressive brand of football using a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move the play forward quickly through the middle and wide areas. The goal for Serbia is to maintain high intensity and use verticality to catch the opposition out of position.

Bogdan Gojtkov stays between the posts to command his area. In front of him, the back four works as a unit to manage space. Ivan Petrovic acts as the right back to provide width, while Milan Spahovic operates at left back. The central pairing of Nemanja Zizic and Vanja Krstic must defend zonally to protect the middle. Zizic and Krstic need to stay compact to ensure they do not get pulled out of position, often looking to clear the lines when the pressure becomes too high.

The midfield works as a three-man unit to control the center of the pitch. Aleksa Mihajlovic plays as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space to create chances. Zdravko Novikov and Stojan Lazarevic operate in the central roles to connect the defense to the attack. Novikov and Lazarevic must work to squeeze the space in the middle and win the second ball to keep the pressure on the opponent. They are responsible for recycling possession and helping to transition from a mid-block into an attacking phase.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Stefan Bojinov acts as the central striker to lead the line and hold up the ball for the teammates arriving late into the box. On the flanks, Jovan Ristic and Dusko Mitrovic act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and threaten the goal. These attackers press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The movements of Ristic and Mitrovic are designed to create runs in behind or allow for cutbacks from the byline to help Bojinov.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having Mihajlovic and the front three close down the opposition, Serbia can win the ball back high up the pitch. Another strength is the ability to use the wingers to isolate wide players in one on one situations. This creates significant problems for the opposition full backs when Mitrovic or Ristic receive the ball in space.

This 4-3-3 formation relies on high pressing and quick transitions to break down the opposition. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a high line or struggle to play out from the back.
