Crvena zvezda aims to be defensively solid and rely on quick transitions. They use a 5-4-1 formation that is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents in behind. This lineup focuses on a compact block to deny space in the middle of the pitch and force the opposition to play wide.

Matheus guards the goal while the defensive unit holds a low block to protect the area. The back line consists of a central trio with Krunić acting as the main anchor. Veljković plays as a right centre-back and Tebo operates as the left centre-back. To provide width, Eraković and Tiknizyan act as attacking wing backs who must track back to form a five man line when defending. The defenders stay close together to prevent through balls and ensure they win the second ball in the defensive third.

In the middle of the pitch, a four man midfield works to protect the central zone. Abu Fani and V. Kostov form a central pairing to shield the defence and pick up runners. Abu Fani drives forward with the ball to help move play from the back, while V. Kostov helps to recycle possession. M. Ivanić and Loizou operate on the flanks to provide width and help the wing backs. These four players press in a mid-block to squeeze the space between the lines and cut off the passing lane to the opposition striker.

The attacking side relies on a lone striker, Bruno Duarte, who plays as a target man to hold up the ball. Duarte must hold the ball under pressure to allow the midfield to push up the pitch. M. Ivanić and Loizou tuck inside at times to support the build up, while Eraković and Tiknizyan look to provide crosses from the byline. The team looks to break quickly by finding the feet of the striker or playing long to exploit the space behind the opposition defence.

One main strength for Crvena zvezda is the compactness when defending in a narrow block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Another advantage is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once the team wins the ball back. The transition from a low block to a counter attack allows them to catch teams out of position.

This formation provides a very disciplined way to frustrate teams that dominate possession. It is best suited for matches against high scoring opponents where winning a clean sheet is the priority.
