Manchester United relies on a vertical attacking style and a high press within a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to control the middle of the pitch by crowding the center and using heavy numbers to win the ball back high up the pitch. The goal is to use the extra bodies in the middle to dominate transitions and quickly move the ball to the front three.

Lammens sits between the posts to start the build up. In front of him, Martinez and Maguire form a two man back line that plays very high to compress the space. Martinez acts as a ball playing defender to distribute the ball from the back, while Maguire uses his aerial strength to defend long balls and clear the lines. Because there are only two central defenders, they must hold a high line and be ready to cover wide areas or pick up runners as the ball moves.

The midfield is a massive block of five players designed to squeeze the space. Hall and Dalot act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and protect the center. Santos and Tielemans operate as two central midfielders who connect the defense to the attack. Tielemans provides a high passing range to switch play, while Santos works to win the second ball. Bruno sits as the advanced ten, acting as the main creative hub to play through the lines and find the forwards.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Dorgu operates on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside and create overloads, while Mbeumo stays wide on the right to provide width. Šeško acts as the central striker to lead the press from the front. This front three works to pin the last defender and create runs in behind, often relying on Bruno to deliver a through ball or a quick pass to find Šeško in tight spaces.

One major strength of this Manchester United lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves because of the five midfielders and three forwards. This setup forces the opposition to play long and allows the defenders to win the ball back quickly in the middle third.

This formation is built to dominate possession and overwhelm opponents through central density. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
