Celta Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Radu (Iván) · Carre (Rueda) · Javiro (Álvaro/manu) · Starfelt (Unai) · Marcos (Carlos) · Galán · Moriba (Vecino) · romano (Febrero) · Jones (Carles) · Williot (Hugo) · Aspas/borja (Ferran/duran)Celta focuses on being defensively solid and playing with high intensity, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to defend in a low block and hit teams on the transition. By using a back five, the team can remain compact and force the opposition out wide.
Radu stands between the posts to command the penalty area. In front of him, the back line works as a narrow defensive block consisting of three central defenders. Starfelt acts as the central figure, while Javiro and Marcos operate as wide centre-backs to provide cover. Galán and Carre function as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width and tracking back to defend the flanks. This defensive unit aims to stay compact to deny space between the lines.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to maintain control in the center of the pitch. Moriba and romano are responsible for shielding the defense and recycling possession when the team wins it back. Moriba often works to press aggressively to win the ball high, while romano helps to connect the defensive unit to the attacking players. They must work hard to cover the ground left behind by the wing backs.
Up front, Celta uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Williot and Jones operate as wide wingers, with Williot looking to cut inside to create chances and Jones staying wide to provide service. Aspas or Borja leads the line as a lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and finding the feet of the runners. The forwards are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.
A major advantage of this 5-2-3 formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Carre and Galán. The team also benefits from being very hard to break down when they drop into a compact defensive block. The speed of transition allows the attackers to exploit spaces quickly once the midfield recovers the ball.
Celta utilizes this setup to remain difficult to beat while looking to punish opponents on the break. This formation is best suited for games against dominant teams that control large amounts of possession.
