Starting Lineup

Palestra · James · Colwill · W. Fofana · J. Pedro · Rogers · Palmer · Caicedo · E. Fernández · P. Neto · Sánchez

Chelsea plays a vertical style of football using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup relies on high intensity to win the ball back and move the play forward quickly through the middle. The Blues want to control the middle of the pitch to create many chances and keep the opponent pinned back.

Sánchez starts in goal to protect the back line. Chelsea uses a high line with only two central defenders, Colwill and W. Fofana, to hold the position. Colwill uses his passing range to play out from the back and start attacks. W. Fofana is there to cover the space behind and win headers in the box. They have to be ready to step up to set the offside trap and squeeze the space.

The midfield is a massive part of this Chelsea formation. Palestra and James sit deep as a double pivot to shield the two defenders. Caicedo uses his pressing intensity to win the ball in the middle, while E. Fernández connects the defensive and attacking lines. Palmer plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to use his passing range to play through the lines. This five man unit allows the team to compress the midfield and win possession high up the pitch.

In the final third, the team uses three attackers. Rogers and P. Neto act as wide wingers to stretch the defence. Rogers stays wide to pull defenders out of position and create room. P. Neto likes to cut inside to create goal threats. J. Pedro operates as the lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of the teammates arriving late into the box. They press the opposition back line to force a long ball and win the second ball.

This lineup offers huge numerical superiority in midfield. With five players in the middle, the team can easily win the second ball and control the tempo. The team can also press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. This forces the opponent to play under extreme pressure and prevents them from playing out from the back.

The 2-5-3 is a high risk, high reward lineup designed for total dominance. It is best suited for games where Chelsea needs to overwhelm a low block through central control and aggressive pressing.
