ZANINETTI guards the goal as the last line of defense. The team defends in a narrow defensive block with three central defenders. HERMAN sits in the middle to win the header and command the area. LOPEZ and MUÑOZ act as the wide centre-backs to cover the channels and protect the space behind the wing backs. MARANI and GUARDIA act as attacking wing backs when the team has the ball, but they must track back quickly to form a five man line when defending. This unit aims to keep things compact and force the opponent to play wide.

A double pivot manages the center of the pitch to shield the defense. CORONEL and LOPEZ sit in front of the back three to intercept passes and win the second ball. These two players are responsible for breaking up play and starting the move. ALBORNOS and ALMADA operate in the half spaces as wide midfielders. They provide a link between the defense and the attack, often dropping back to help the wing backs or pushing up to support the lone striker.

The attack relies on a lone striker, ACEVEDO, who must hold up the ball and work with the midfielders. ACEVEDO acts as a target man to receive long balls and lay it off to the runners. ALBORNOS and ALMADA look to support him by making runs into the box or drifting wide to stretch the defence. The team builds play through quick transitions rather than slow possession. They look to use the width provided by MARANI and GUARDIA to deliver crosses when they can get to the byline.

Unión (SF) offers great compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very hard for the opposition to find gaps between the lines. The formation also allows for quick speed of transition once the ball is won back in the middle. The two wing backs can push high to create wide overloads, giving the team a way to move up the pitch quickly.
