This lineup is built to dominate the ball and squeeze the pitch through aggressive movements. The Gunners look to win the ball high up the pitch to keep the opponent pinned in their own half.
David Raya operates between the posts to start the build up. The back line functions as a flat back four that can step up to maintain a high line. Saliba and Stones act as the central defenders, with Saliba using his recovery speed to cover the space behind while Stones plays as a ball playing defender. Gabriel and Mosquera provide strength and aerial dominance on the left side of the defense. Ben White and Timber take roles as full backs that can overlap to provide width, while Calafiori and Hincapié offer different options at left back to help play out from the back.
A three-man midfield provides the engine for Arsenal to control the tempo. Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimarães work in a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Martin Ødegaard plays as the primary creator from the right side of the midfield, looking to find passes that break the line. Declan Rice and Mikel Merino operate in the left half spaces, with Rice acting as the carrier who drives forward with the ball to link the defense and attack. This midfield unit is designed to win the second ball and quickly spread wide to the flanks.
The attack uses three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Bukayo Saka and Madueke operate as wingers, with Saka often looking to cut inside to create goal scoring chances. On the left, Eze and Godts provide pace and trickery to isolate wide players in one on one situations. Kai Havertz or Viktor Gyökeres leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, using their physical presence to hold up the ball and bring others into play. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and win possession back quickly.
One major advantage of this Arsenal formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield through the movement of the full backs. The team can also use coordinated waves to press the opponent in a high block. Another strength is the speed of transition when the ball is won back high up the pitch, allowing the wingers to run in behind immediately.
This 4-3-3 formation is a high intensity system designed to suffocate opponents through ball retention and pressing. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and struggle to cope with constant pressure.
