Starting Lineup

Fernando · Franklin · Miguel · Samuel · Erick · Anthony · Víctor · . · Gavi · Carlos · .

Algeria looks to play a direct and vertical brand of football using a 4-4-2. This formation is built to strike quickly on the transition and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. By using two banks of four, the team seeks to maintain a compact block when defending while preparing to launch attacks into the channels.

Fernando operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line features a flat back four consisting of Franklin at left back and Erick at right back. In the middle of the defense, Miguel and Samuel act as the central pair, with Samuel providing aerial strength to defend set pieces while Miguel covers the space behind when the full backs push up. Franklin and Erick are tasked to overlap the wide midfielders to create extra numbers in the final third.

The midfield is composed of two central players and two wide midfielders. Víctor acts as a driver in the central area, looking to carry the ball forward and link the defense to the attack. The RCM role provides the necessary cover to shield the center backs, allowing Víctor to move higher. On the flanks, Gavi and Anthony provide the width, with Gavi looking to cross from deep and Anthony working to get to the byline. This midfield unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and win the second ball to keep play moving.

Up front, the team utilizes two forwards in a partnership. Carlos leads the line as the main striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or run in behind the defense. The RS works closely with Carlos, often dropping into the hole to create space or playing as a second striker to combine in tight spaces. This duo uses their movement to pull the opposition center backs out of position, creating room for late runs from the midfield. Algeria relies on these combinations to break the line of the defense.

One major advantage for Algeria is the ability to create wide overloads when Franklin and Anthony move forward together. The formation also offers great compactness when defending in a mid-block, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The speed of transition from the midfield to Carlos and the RS allows the team to hit the opposition before they can set their defensive line.

This 4-4-2 formation is designed for a high intensity game centered on quick counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
