The team is built to play a high press and focus on overwhelming the opponent with numbers in the final third. This formation is designed to stay vertical and move the ball forward quickly to catch the opposition before they can settle.
In the defensive phase, ZANINETTI works to command the area from goal. The back line sits as a flat back four, with GUARDIA on the right and PINTO on the left. In the middle, MUÑOZ and LOPEZ act as the central defenders who must hold the line and defend zonally. MUÑOZ is a ball playing defender tasked to play out from the back, while LOPEZ must cover and step up to intercept passes. The back four works to squeeze the space and keep the unit compact when the opposition moves into the final third.
The midfield is operated by a double pivot of LOPEZ and CORONEL. These two players are responsible for shielding the defence and winning the second ball. LOPEZ works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping to receive from the centre-backs. CORONEL has the role to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. They must stay disciplined to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines and ensure they can recycle possession when the team needs to reset.
The attacking lineup features four players positioned high to stretch the defence. ACEVEDO and ALBORNOS lead the line as two forwards in a partnership, looking to find the feet of the striker and pin the last defender. On the flanks, GARCIA and ALMADA act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to provide width. These wingers look to cut inside or receive the ball to deliver a cross into the box. This formation allows the team to attack in combinations and press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.
This lineup provides Unión (SF) with several tactical advantages. The primary strength is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of the wingers and full backs. There is also a significant capacity to win it back high up the pitch, using the four attackers to trigger a press. This creates opportunities to hit in behind on the transition and exploit disorganized defensive lines.
The 4-2-4 formation makes this a very aggressive and direct team. It is best suited for game situations where the team needs to break down a deep low block or chase a goal against a side that allows space behind.
