Eurico Lara acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line sits as a flat back four, with Francisco Arce operating as a right back and Everaldo as a left back. Paulhião and Hugo de León form the central pair, where Hugo de León provides aerial strength and stability. The defenders work to defend zonally and maintain a high line to support the forward press.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide a layer of protection for the back four. Emerson and Milton Kuelle work to shield the defense and win the second ball in central areas. They are tasked to receive the ball from the defenders and quickly find the attackers. Emerson looks to carry the ball forward, while Milton Kuelle helps to recycle possession and protect the spaces behind the advanced midfield.

An aggressive front line utilizes four attackers to stretch the defense wide and deep. Renato Gaúcho plays as an inverted winger on the right, while Tarcisio occupies the left flank to provide width. The central presence is occupied by a partnership of two forwards, Gessy and Alcíndo, who work to occupy the two central defenders. These attackers press from the front to trigger a press high up the pitch, looking to win the ball back and immediately hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Grêmio is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the wingers. The formation also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. This creates constant pressure on the opposing center backs and forces them into rushed decisions.
