Chiellini plays as the central defender, using his aerial strength and defensive positioning to win headers and stop direct attacks. Squillaci and Koscielny defend zonally to the sides, staying compact to prevent runners from slipping through. They shift together to squeeze the space and cover for each other when one player steps up to engage a striker.

The midfield is a crowded area designed to dominate possession and break the line. Arteta and Wilshere form a double pivot to protect the back three. Arteta uses his passing range to recycle possession and find the attackers. Ozil plays as the central playmaker, using his vision and passing range to split the defence with a through ball and find players in dangerous positions. Ayew and Iturbe occupy the half-spaces to support the central zone, helping to carry the ball forward or press in a mid-block to win it back high up the pitch.

Up front, Arsenal utilizes two forwards in a partnership. Demba Ba works as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. Podolski works alongside him, looking to arrive late into the box or knock it in behind the defenders. They combine in tight spaces to pull wide players out of position, creating space for Ozil or the wide midfielders to enter the area. The goal is to use the two strikers to pin the last defender and create room for late runs from the midfield.

One main advantage of this 3-5-2 formation is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By packing the centre with five players, Arsenal can control the tempo and deny the turn of opposition midfielders. Another strength is the ability to press in pairs, with the forwards and the attacking midfielders triggering a press to win the ball high up the pitch and launch immediate attacks.
