Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Alvarez · Vini Jr. · Saka · Rice · Odegaard · Bruno G · Calafiori · Timber · Gabriel · Saliba · RayaArsenal focuses on heavy pressing and fast transitions in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack with speed through wide areas. The Gunners use this system to pin opponents back and create constant threats in the final third.
Raya starts in goal to organize the defensive line. The back five consists of Bruno G, Saliba, and Gabriel acting as the central core. Saliba and Gabriel are dominant in the air and work together to hold a high line. Timber operates as the right wing back to provide width, while Calafiori plays as the left wing back to support the attack. This defensive unit remains compact to prevent through balls and ensures cover if the wing backs push high.
The midfield functions as a two man unit designed to bridge the gap between the defense and the front three. Rice works to shield the defense and break the line with his ball carrying. Odegaard plays as a creative engine, looking to play through the lines and find the forwards. Rice is tasked to win the second ball and press aggressively to win it back high up the pitch, while Odegaard connects the play to the attackers.
Arsenal utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Vini Jr. plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and drive at the opposition. Saka occupies the right wing to stretch the defense and deliver crosses. Alvarez acts as the central striker, working to hold up the ball and link up with the wide players. The front three press the opposition back line to force a long ball and create chances for the midfield to intercept.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The wide overloads from Timber and Saka can isolate wide players in one on one situations. The team can also achieve compactness when defending by dropping into a narrow defensive block. Having three attackers allows Arsenal to pin the last defender and create space for late runs.
The 5-2-3 is a high intensity setup built for aggressive pressing and rapid verticality. It is best suited for games where the team needs to exploit spaces behind a high defensive line.
