This lineup is built to play vertical, direct football that forces the opposition back. The goal is to pin the last defender and create constant pressure in the final third.
Ronnie Simpson stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat back four with Tommy Gemmell at left back and Danny McGrain at right back. Both Gemmell and McGrain push high to overlap the wingers and provide width. In the center, Billy McNeill and Roy Aitken act as the primary defenders. McNeill is dominant in the air and works to win the header, while Aitken works to cover the space behind a high line and win the second ball.
The midfield functions as a double pivot consisting of Bobby Murdoch and Paul McStay. Murdoch sits deeper to recycle possession and pick up runners, while McStay carries the ball forward to connect the defensive and attacking lines. McStay is known for his ability to pass through the lines and his composure on the ball. Together, they work to protect the two central defenders and ensure the team does not get bypassed in the center.
The attacking unit is very potent with four players across the front. Jimmy Johnstone plays on the right wing and looks to cut inside to create chances, while Bobby Lennox operates on the left to stretch the defence. In the center, Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy McGrory form a partnership. Dalglish uses his dribbling style to drop into the hole and link up play, while McGrory acts as a target man to hold up the ball. This formation creates many runs in behind and allows for quick combinations in the box.
A major advantage for Celtic is the numerical superiority they create in the attacking third. By using four forwards, they often isolate wide players in one on one situations and create wide overloads from overlapping full backs. The team can also press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. This high intensity makes it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
This 4-2-4 formation creates a relentless attacking force that is built for dominance. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a deep block or exploit a high line through speed and numbers.
