Creation DateJuly 26, 2026

Starting Lineup

Maldini · Zambrotta · Scirea · Baresi · Inzaghi · Del Piero · Totti · Pirlo · De Rossi · R. Baggio · Buffon

Italy plays an aggressive 2-5-3. The squad focuses on high intensity to win the ball high up the pitch and control the tempo through a massive midfield presence. This formation is built to overwhelm the opposition by flooding the central areas and creating constant threats in the final third.

Buffon stands between the posts to provide security with his commanding presence and shot stopping. The defensive unit uses a pair of central defenders, Scirea and Baresi, who must remain highly concentrated. Scirea is able to carry the ball forward to progress through the thirds, while Baresi uses his reading of the game to cover space and intercept play. They must be ready to step up to play the offside trap or drop back to defend against runners.

The midfield is where Italy dominates. Maldini and Zambrotta act as wide midfielders within the five man unit to provide width and cover the flanks. Pirlo sits in a deep position to dictate play with his passing range and ability to switch play. De Rossi provides the grit needed to win the second ball and shield the two defenders. Totti plays as the attacking ten, finding space between the lines to combine in tight spaces and deliver passes to the attackers.

The front three are designed to punish any defensive errors. Del Piero and R. Baggio function as inverted wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal. This movement leaves space for the wide midfielders to overlap and cross. Inzaghi stays central as a striker who makes constant runs in behind to exploit the space. A heavy press from the attackers forces the opposition into making mistakes.

One major tactical advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the midfield. Having five players allows the team to recycle possession and dictate the pace of the game. The side can also create wide overloads when Maldini or Zambrotta push up to join the attack. This creates constant pressure and makes it very difficult for opponents to track every runner.

This 2-5-3 is a high risk, high reward lineup that demands total concentration from the defenders. It is best suited for matches where Italy wants to dominate the ball and break down an opponent that sits deep in a low block.
