Sundowns Soccer Formation
Starting Lineup
JAMA (C) · MITOMA · ETHAN · TOLLA · HOENDER · GIO · UMAR · JERRY · MILLS · HUSSEIN · ?????Sundowns focus on high pressing and rapid transitions in a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and quickly move it into the final third to catch the opposition out of position. The team wants to control the tempo through aggressive ball recovery and direct movements toward the goal.
The goalkeeper starts the build up from the back to maintain a high line. In front, the back four acts as a flat line where HUSSEIN operates as a right back to provide width and cover the flank. TOLLA plays as the right centre back and works to win the second ball while UMAR occupies the left centre back spot to defend zonally. HOENDER plays as the left back and stays wide to stretch the defence. The defensive unit aims to squeeze the space and keep the distance between the lines small.
In the middle of the pitch, a three man midfield connects the lines. JERRY acts as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Jema, the captain, operates as a central midfielder who works to win it back high up the pitch and carries the ball forward. ETHAN plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find the feet of the striker or arrive late into the box. This group works to control the center and protect against counter attacks.
The attacking front line uses three attackers to pin the last defender. GIO plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. On the wings, MITOMA and MILLS act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. They often look to play a one two with the central players or move into the half spaces. The team builds the attack through combinations in tight spaces to create runs in behind the opposition defence.
Sundowns gain a major advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This puts immense pressure on the opposition build up and forces errors. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when they win the ball in the middle third. By using the width of HUSSEIN and HOENDER, they can create wide overloads to bypass the midfield.
This 4-3-3 lineup relies on high intensity to dominate the tempo of the game. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with a high line or struggle to play out from the back.
