Starting Lineup

JAMA (C) · MITOMA · ETHAN · TOLLA (CR) · HOENDER · GIO · UMAR (DAYYAAN) · JERRY · MILLS · HUSSEIN · ?????

Sundowns rely on a high press to win the ball back high up the pitch in a 4-3-3. This formation is built to play a vertical game where players look to break the line as quickly as possible. The team focuses on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition before they can settle.

The defensive unit relies on ????? in goal to organize the back line. Sundowns defend with a flat back four where Jerry operates as the right back and Hoender plays as the left back. Umar acts as the left centre back while Tolla plays as the right centre back. Both Umar and Tolla must hold the line and defend zonally to keep the defensive block compact. The full backs, Jerry and Hoender, are expected to push up to support the attack but must track back quickly to prevent being caught on the transition.

In the middle of the pitch, Hussein acts as the single pivot to shield the defence. He is responsible for sitting deep and recycling possession to allow the more advanced players to move forward. Jama, who is the captain, plays as a central midfielder to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Jama is tasked to drive forward with the ball and link the play. Ethan plays as the attacking ten, operating in the space behind the striker to find the feet of the attackers or arrive late into the box.

The attack uses three players across the front to stretch the defence. Mills plays as the left winger and looks to cut inside to create chances, while Mitoma plays as the right winger to provide width. Gio operates as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and pin the last defender to create space for the runners. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The goal is to use the movement of Mills and Mitoma to isolate wide players in one on one situations.

Sundowns benefit from the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This creates a lot of pressure on the opposition goalkeeper and defenders. Another advantage is the speed of transition when Hussein or Jama wins the ball and immediately looks to find the front three. The formation allows for quick combination play in the final third to break down a low block.

This 4-3-3 formation is a high energy lineup designed to dominate through intense pressing. It is best suited for games where the team wants to squeeze the space and force the opponent into mistakes.
