Inter focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch and hitting teams on the transition. This is a 3-5-2 formation. The team looks to control the tempo and use a high press to squeeze the space in the opposition half, making it difficult for opponents to build from the back. This system is built to play a vertical style of football that exploits gaps between the lines.

Josep Martinez starts in goal to anchor the defense. The back line consists of a back three. Bastoni plays as the left centre-back and acts as a ball playing defender who can step into midfield. Akanji takes the right centre-back role, while C. Romero occupies the central position to hold the line and win headers. Akanji and C. Romero are dominant in the air to win the second ball. The defenders work together to maintain a high line and set the offside trap.

The midfield is a three-man midfield with a deep lying playmaker. Calhanoglu sits deep to recycle possession and switch play with his passing range. Barella acts as the carrier, driving forward with the ball and making late runs into the box. C.Jones links the lines and provides stability by pressing in a mid-block. On the flanks, Dimarco and Andy Diouf act as attacking wing backs to provide width. Dimarco will often overlap to whip it in, while Andy Diouf covers the wide areas to prevent counters and show the winger outside.

Up front, Inter uses two forwards in a partnership. Lautaro and Thuram lead the line. Lautaro often drops into the hole to find the feet of the strikers and link up play between the lines. Thuram uses his pace to make runs in behind and stretch the defence. The wing backs, Dimarco and Andy Diouf, pull wide to create space for the two attackers to work in central combinations. They press the opposition back line to force a long ball and aim to hit in behind on the transition.

This formation provides numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. The wide overloads from Dimarco and Andy Diouf create constant threats on the flanks. Inter can also transition very quickly, using the speed of Thuram and the passing of Calhanoglu to break the line. This lineup also offers compactness when defending in a mid-block.

The Inter 3-5-2 is a potent formation built for aggressive pressing and rapid attacks. It is most effective against teams that play a high line or those that lack numbers in their midfield.
