Starting Lineup

Baumgartner · Sabitzer · Schlager · R. Schmid · Chukwuemeka · Wanner · Prass · Laimer · Danso · Lienhart · Wiegele

Austria plays a very aggressive, vertical style of football to dominate the pitch. This 2-5-3 formation relies on high pressure to force turnovers in the opposition half. The goal is to squeeze the space and play through the lines as fast as possible to catch the defense out of position.

Wiegele stays between the posts to manage the defense from the back. The defensive unit consists of a back two with Danso and Lienhart acting as the central pillars. Because there are only two defenders, they must play a high line to compress the pitch. Danso uses his aerial strength and ability to intercept passes to stop attacks early. Lienhart must cover behind him and stay ready to sweep behind the line if the opposition plays a ball in behind.

The midfield is the engine of this Austria lineup and features five players working in close quarters. Laimer and Prass form a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. The former uses his pressing intensity to disrupt play in the middle. Schlager and Sabitzer operate in the half-spaces to connect the play. Sabitzer uses his passing range to switch play and find attackers. Wanner sits ahead of them as an attacking ten to find pockets of space between the lines. This heavy midfield presence helps the team recycle possession and drive forward with the ball.

In the attacking third, the team utilizes three players to pin the last defender. Baumgartner leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition. R. Schmid and Chukwuemeka provide width by playing as wide wingers. The former looks to cut inside to create shooting chances, while Chukwuemeka tries to get to the byline to whip it in. The forwards work together to create runs in behind and deliver early crosses into the box.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By packing the midfield, the team can easily win the ball back high up the pitch. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the wingers. This allows the team to spread wide and stretch the defense, creating gaps for late runs into the box.

The 2-5-3 formation is built for a high pressing, high intensity game. It is best suited for matches where the team can overwhelm an opponent in the middle of the park.
