Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Stones · Bastoni · Pavard · Dimarco · Zielinski · Barella · Calhanoglu · M. Thuram · Lautaro · Sucic · ProvedelFocusing on a high press and vertical play, Inter operates within a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to control the middle of the pitch and strike quickly when the ball is won. The team looks to win it back high up the pitch to catch opponents before they can organize. By playing direct and vertical, the team aims to bypass the midfield and find the forwards as quickly as possible.
Provedel guards the net for Inter. The back three consists of Bastoni, Stones, and Pavard. Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender with great passing range to help play out from the back and move the ball into the midfield. Pavard plays as the right centre back to cover the flank and track runners, while Stones holds the central line to win headers and intercept passes. This defensive unit works to stay compact and squeeze the space between the lines to prevent through balls.
In the middle of the park, Calhanoglu sits as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession using his passing range. Dimarco operates on the left to provide width and cross on the run, while Sucic and Zielinski occupy the central zones to connect the lines. Barella plays as an attacking midfielder who uses his energy to drive the ball forward and make late runs into the box. This group links the defence and attack by progressing through the thirds and maintaining a compact unit.
The attack features a partnership of two forwards. M. Thuram acts as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and hunt for the ball high. Lautaro plays as a partner who uses his clinical finishing to exploit gaps and work in tandem with M. Thuram. They work together to hit in behind on the transition or play one-twos to find space. The combination of these two forwards allows the team to attack in quick bursts and create runs in behind.
One major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield that allows the team to control the tempo and win the second ball. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. Additionally, the wide overloads created when Dimarco pushes up to overlap the winger allow the team to stretch the defence and find openings.
This 3-5-2 formation is designed for a team that wants to dominate central areas while remaining dangerous on the break. It is most effective against opponents who struggle to handle high pressure and quick transitions.
