Borges helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Zoubir and Kashchuk look to win the second ball and drive forward with the ball. This midfield group works to squeeze the space between the lines to deny the opponent any time on the ball.

Sawo acts as a lone striker, working to hold up the ball and provide an outlet for the team. The attack relies on Sawo to make runs in behind the opposition defense when the team wins possession. The midfielders look to find the feet of the striker or play long balls to bypass the midfield. Wide players like Zoubir and Kashchuk will look to support the attack by moving into the half spaces to create passing options for Sawo.

One major strength of this Azerbaijan formation is the compactness when defending in a mid-block. The five midfielders and four defenders create a hard unit that is difficult to pass through. Another advantage is the ability to hit in behind on the transition once the ball is won back in the center. The setup allows the team to remain solid while waiting for the opposition to commit too many players forward.
