Celta relies on a strong defensive base to launch rapid attacks through the wide areas. The team uses a 5-2-3 formation to maintain a solid presence in the middle while providing plenty of width in the final third. This lineup is built to soak up pressure and hit the opposition on the transition with speed.

Radu stays in goal to command the box and direct the defensive line. The back line consists of a central trio with Starfelt holding the middle, while Marcos and Javiro sit on either side. Starfelt is tasked to win the header and clear the lines during periods of heavy pressure. Galán and Carreira act as attacking wing backs, often pushing high to support the attack. The defensive unit can shift between a mid block and a low block to deny the turn to the opposition attackers.

The midfield functions as a double pivot with Miguelro and Febrero in the center. These two players must shield the defence and cover the spaces between the lines. Miguelro and Febrero work to recycle possession and find the feet of the striker or the wingers. They are responsible for pressing in a mid block to win the ball back and preventing the opponent from playing through the lines. By staying compact, they help the team hold a narrow defensive block when defending.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three players across the front. Williot and Ángel act as wide attackers, with Williot often looking to cut inside and Ángel to spread wide. Aspas/jutgla leads the line as a lone striker, using his vision to play through the lines and lay it off to teammates. The wing backs, Galán and Carreira, are expected to overlap the winger to create overloads. This movement helps to stretch the defence and creates opportunities to whip it in from the flanks.

A major advantage for Celta is the ability to create wide overloads using the overlapping wing backs. This forces the opposition to defend in one on one situations against the wingers. The formation also provides great compactness when defending, making it hard for opponents to find gaps in the middle. The team can also move quickly from a defensive block to an attacking position to catch the opposition out of position.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a stable platform for a counter attacking style of play. It is particularly effective when facing teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
