Arsenal looks to dominate the ball and win it back high up the pitch with a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to control the tempo through a crowded central area while maintaining enough bodies to squeeze the space when the opposition has the ball. By occupying the middle of the pitch, Arsenal intends to suffocate opponents and move the ball quickly through the lines.

David Raya plays between the posts, acting as a ball playing goalkeeper to help play out from the back. The back four features a high line with W.Saliba and Gabriel operating as the central pair, where Gabriel provides aerial strength and Saliba covers the space behind. Jurriën Timber and R.Caliafiori occupy the wide positions, with Caliafiori often tucking in to support the central defenders while Timber provides cover on the flank. This unit works to maintain a compact shape and step up to catch opponents offside.

The midfield is a dense five man block designed to dominate the center of the park. Declan Rice and Bruno Guimarães form a double pivot to shield the defense, with Rice using his high work rate to intercept passes and Guimarães acting as the carrier to drive forward with the ball. M.Ødegaard sits just ahead of them to connect the defensive and attacking lines, using his passing range to find teammates. Vinícius Jr and Bukayo Saka operate in the half spaces, where they can press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch or shift wide to spread the play.

In the final third, Kai Havertz operates as a lone striker who acts as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition back line. He works to hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The attack relies on the movement of Saka and Vinícius Jr, who often cut inside to create central threats or combine in tight spaces. This setup creates many runs in behind and allows the team to attack in combinations through the middle.

One major tactical advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to recycle possession easily. The presence of Saka and Vinícius Jr also allows for wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the attack. Furthermore, the ability to press in a mid-block makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.

This 4-5-1 formation is built for high possession and intense pressure. It is best suited for matches where Arsenal needs to control the game and suffocate a side that tries to play through the middle.
