This lineup aims to squeeze the space high up the pitch and use a high line to keep the team compact. By controlling the ball and pressing in waves, the Gunners look to dominate territory and force the opposition into mistakes.
David Raya plays between the posts to start play from the back. The back four features Saliba and Gabriel as the central pair, with Saliba acting as a ball playing defender and Gabriel providing aerial strength. Timber operates as the right back to provide width, while Calafiori plays at left back to tuck inside and help control the middle. This defensive unit works to maintain a high line and set the offside trap to keep the opposition from playing through the lines.
The midfield consists of a single pivot with Zubimendi sitting deep to shield the defence and recycle possession. To his left, Rice works as a carrier to drive the ball forward and win the second ball, while Ødegaard operates as the creative engine in the right half space. Ødegaard uses his exceptional passing range to find teammates in tight spaces. This three man midfield links the back line to the attack by moving the ball quickly between the lines.
Up front, Arsenal utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. Vinícius plays on the left wing and cuts inside to threaten the goal, while Saka occupies the right wing to isolate defenders one on one. Havertz acts as a mobile striker who can drop deep to link up play or make runs in behind the defensive line. The movement of the front three is designed to create space for late runs from Rice or Merino into the box.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Timber and Saka combine on the right. Arsenal also benefits from numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch when Zubimendi and Rice squeeze the space against the opponent. This makes it difficult for teams to play through the middle, forcing them to go direct and lose possession.
This Arsenal formation is built to dominate games through high intensity pressing and ball retention. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
