The midfield uses a three man unit where Kristijan and Han-Noah occupy the central roles with Alexis playing as an attacking ten. Kristijan and Han-Noah act to shield the defense and win the second ball. They work to recycle possession and move the ball through the thirds to reach the attackers. Alexis plays to break the line and looks to arrive late into the box to score. This trio works to connect the defensive unit with the front line through short passes.

In the attacking phase, Michael plays as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender. Mert and Fabian act as wide attackers to stretch the defence. Mert often looks to cut inside into the half spaces, while Fabian works to get to the byline and whip it in. This allows the team to attack in combinations and hit in behind on the transition. The movement of the front three is designed to create runs in behind and isolate the wingers in wide situations.

A key advantage for Augsburg is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. Because Alexis pushes so far forward, the team can trigger a press very early to force a long ball from the opponent. Another strength is the wide overloads created by the overlapping runs of Marius and Mads. These runs help to spread the play and create space in the middle for the midfielders to drive forward with the ball.
