Seeking to dominate through high pressing and aggressive verticality, PSG utilizes a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the opposition in their own half and win the ball back high up the pitch. By using such a heavy attacking presence, the team seeks to control the rhythm of the game and overwhelm the defensive lines of the opponent.

Safonov starts between the posts to organize the defensive line. The backline consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, with Marquinhos acting as the leader to command the defensive line and Pacho providing cover. Marquinhos is the captain and uses his reading of the game to manage the defensive unit. This duo must often play with a high line to ensure the distance between the defenders and the midfield remains small. Because the team plays with only two deep defenders, they must be prepared to step up or drop quickly to manage the space behind them.

The midfield unit is the engine of this PSG lineup, acting as a massive block that connects the defense to the attack. Vitinha operates in the center to recycle possession and help progress through the thirds. Beside him, Nuno Mendes and Hakimi act as wide midfielders who provide much-needed width. Hakimi often carries the ball forward to join the attack, while Nuno Mendes uses his pace to cover wide areas. João Neves operates in the half spaces to link the play, and the player known as 8 works in the left half space to drive the team forward. This five-man midfield allows the team to dominate the center of the pitch and press aggressively.

In the final third, the attack is built around three highly mobile players. Dembele leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to make runs in behind the defense. Olise and Kvara occupy the wide positions, with Olise acting as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create chances. Kvara provides width on the left side to stretch the defence. The front three work in combinations to split the defence with through balls and quick movement. This attacking trio forces the opposition back into a low block and creates numerous one on one situations.

One major advantage of this setup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. The midfield provides numerical superiority in the center, allowing the team to win the second ball easily. Additionally, the movement of the wide players like Hakimi and Nuno Mendes allows for wide overloads that can pin the last defender and create space in the middle.

This formation relies on extreme bravery and physical intensity to maintain its high position on the pitch. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a compact opponent through sheer offensive pressure.
