AEK Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Strakosha · Relvas · Moukoudi · Rota · Kostic · Majer · Kairinen · Marin · Koita · Jovic · VargaAEK focuses on a defensive identity centered around a low block and quick transitions. This 5-4-1 formation aims to sit deep and frustrate the opposition while remaining a threat on the break. The lineup relies on being compact to deny space between the lines and force opponents into wide areas.
Strakosha guards the goal as the last line of defense. The defensive unit functions as a back five with Kairinen, Moukoudi, and Marin forming a central block of three. Marin and Moukoudi act as the central defenders, with Kairinen providing coverage on the left side of that trio. Relvas and Rota operate as wing backs, tasked with providing width in attack and tracking back to defend the flanks. This group holds a narrow defensive block when under pressure, ensuring the central area is difficult to penetrate.
The midfield consists of a four man line designed to squeeze the space in front of the defense. Majer and Jovic operate as a double pivot, with Majer often looking to play through the lines and Jovic working to win the second ball and protect the pivot zone. Kostic and Koita occupy the wide areas as left and right midfielders. Kostic provides more presence on the flank to support Relvas, while Koita works to cover the ground on the opposite side. This midfield unit works to connect the defensive unit with the lone striker, often shifting to press when the ball enters their zone.
Varga leads the line as a lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball to allow the midfield to move forward. The attack is built through transitions where Kostic and Koita look to exploit space behind the opponent back line. Relvas and Rota frequently overlap the wingers to create wide overloads. Varga must press the opposition centre backs to disrupt their build up, often playing with his back to goal to lay it off to oncoming runners. The team moves from a compact defensive formation into a vertical attacking unit during transitions.
One major advantage for AEK is the compactness when defending in a low block. The proximity of the five defenders to the four midfielders makes it very hard for opponents to find passing lanes through the middle. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads. When Rota and Relvas push high, they create two on one situations against the opposition full backs. This allows Koita or Kostic to find space to cross or cut inside.
This 5-4-1 formation is built for teams that want to absorb pressure and strike with speed. It is most effective against possession based sides that struggle to break down a crowded central area.
