Starting Lineup

Brignoli · Alexiou · Vida · Georgiev · Zubkov · Pilios · Mantalos · Vitalis · Kutesa · Gacinovic · Zine

AEK relies on a high press and a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch using a 3-6-1 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and dominate the central areas through sheer numbers. By crowding the midfield, AEK aims to control the rhythm of the game and force turnovers in the opposition half.

Brignoli stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back three consists of Alexiou, Vida, and Georgiev. Vida acts as the central figure in this zonal line, providing aerial strength and covering his teammates. Alexiou and Georgiev sit on either side to manage the wide areas and track runners. When the team plays out from the back, these defenders look to find the midfielders to begin an attack.

The midfield is a crowded engine room designed to squeeze the space. Mantalos operates as the single pivot, sitting deep to shield the defence and recycle possession. Ahead of him, Pilios and Vitalis occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Zubkov provides an extra layer of support to drive the ball forward. Kutesa and Gacinovic play in the half-spaces as attacking midfielders, ready to press aggressively and create chances. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to win the second ball and sustain pressure.

In the final third, Zine operates as a lone striker to lead the line. He is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to join the attack. Kutesa and Gacinovic act as attacking midfielders playing just behind him, looking to find gaps in the defence. The movement of the team relies on the wide midfielders pulling wide to stretch the defence, creating space for late runs into the box from Zubkov or Pilios. The attack is built through quick combinations in tight spaces to catch the opposition out of position.

AEK gains a clear advantage through numerical superiority in the midfield, which makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center. The coordinated waves of pressing from the midfield and the front line can trigger a turnover quickly. This formation also allows for great compactness when defending in a mid-block, making it hard for the opposition to find passing lanes.

This 3-6-1 formation is a high energy system designed to suffocate the opponent in their own half. It is best suited for games where AEK can use their midfield numbers to dominate possession against a side that struggles to move the ball under pressure.
