Villalba covering the left. In the heart of the defense, J. Marcelo and Igor Júlio work as a central pairing to defend zonally and win headers. They aim to hold a high line to squeeze the space and keep the distance between the defense and the midfield tight.

A five man midfield provides the engine for the Cruzeiro system. L. Romero sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Ahead of him, B. Rodríguez and Gabriel Pec occupy the central spaces to connect the lines, while K. Arroyo and M. Henrique provide more presence in the half spaces. This group is tasked to press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opponent. When possession is regained, these players look to carry the ball forward to start an attack.

The attacking setup relies on K. Jorge as a lone striker. He is tasked to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front to pin the last defender. Because the midfield is so crowded, the team often looks to find the feet of the striker or use his strength to lay it off for runners. The wingers or wide midfielders need to push up to offer width and create chances for cutbacks from the byline or runs in behind.
