Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
de Ligt · van de Ven · van Hecke · Maatsen · J. Timber · F. de Jong · Gravenberch · Malen · Reijnders · X. Simons · VerbruggenThe Netherlands play with a high press and heavy possession focus in a 3-4-3. This formation allows the team to dominate the ball and squeeze the space in the opponent's half. By using three attackers across the front, the Netherlands aim to pin the last defender and create constant pressure.
Verbruggen plays in goal to play short from the back. The back three consists of de Ligt, van de Ven, and van Hecke. de Ligt acts as a ball playing defender who is dominant in the air to win the header during set pieces. van de Ven provides the speed to cover the space while van Hecke defends zonally to maintain the line. The defensive unit works together to recycle possession and win the second ball.
The midfield features a central pairing of Gravenberch and F. de Jong to control the tempo. F. de Jong uses his passing range to break the line and switch play. Gravenberch works to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Maatsen and J. Timber occupy the wide areas to provide width and support the attack. They can overlap the winger or tuck in to help the central block.
In the final third, the team uses three attackers. Malen acts as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. Reijnders and X. Simons operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to find the feet of the striker. This movement creates space for Maatsen and J. Timber to deliver a cross. The forwards look to combine in tight spaces and hit in behind on the transition.
One major advantage for the Netherlands is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This forces the opposition into mistakes in their own half. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the middle when F. de Jong and Gravenberch control the ball. This allows the team to spread wide and keep the ball moving until a gap opens.
This 3-4-3 formation is built for teams that want to dominate through possession and high pressure. It is best used against opponents who struggle to play out from the back or defend against wide overloads.
