The midfield uses a double pivot consisting of Gloukh and Brandt to link the lines. Gloukh acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball into the half spaces. Brandt works to connect the defensive unit to the attack and is responsible to press aggressively to win the ball high. This duo must cover a lot of ground to prevent being bypassed by the opposition midfield. They work to recycle possession and quickly move the ball to the advancing wing backs.

Ajax utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Marcos Leonardo acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the hunt from the front. He works to find the feet of the striker in combinations while Carrizo and Lang operate as wide wingers. Carrizo stays wide to isolate a one-on-one and Lang looks to cut inside to create more central presence. These three forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
