Lanús prioritizes a defensive identity, looking to frustrate opponents by sitting deep and staying compact. This 5-4-1 formation is built to play a reactive game, focusing on winning the ball and breaking quickly. The primary goal is to limit the space between the defensive and midfield units to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

Ruiz Diaz defends the goal while leading the defensive unit. The back five is composed of Rigau, Gimenez, and Veron in the center, with Sosa and Hernandez as the wing backs. Rigau serves as the central anchor to clear the lines, while Gimenez and Veron act as covering defenders to protect the space behind the midfield. Sosa and Hernandez must push high to provide width during attacks but are expected to track back and defend zonally when the team sits deep. The whole unit works to hold a compact line and deny the turn to any attackers.

The midfield operates as a flat four to shield the defense. Wulff and Rando act as the central pairing to control the middle of the pitch. Rando focuses on marking opponents and intercepting passes, while Wulff works to carry the ball forward to connect the lines. Badilla and Peña provide width on the flanks as wide midfielders. Badilla and Peña must press in a mid-block to win the ball high up the pitch and can switch play to the opposite side to stretch the defense. This midfield group works to recycle possession and maintain control of the central zone.

Varela serves as the lone striker and must act as a focal point. He needs to hold up the ball to wait for support from the midfield. The attacking moves often involve Sosa and Hernandez overlapping the wide midfielders to provide service from the byline. Lanús looks to hit in behind on the transition, using Varela to pin the last defender while others make runs into the box. The team uses combinations in tight spaces to move from a low block into an attacking position.

One major advantage for Lanús is the extreme compactness when defending in a low block. The five defenders and four midfielders make it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the central area. Additionally, the formation allows for great speed of transition. By keeping players close together, the team can win the ball and immediately look for Varela to break quickly.

The 5-4-1 formation provides a solid platform for teams that want to be hard to beat. It is ideally suited for facing high possession teams where a strong defensive unit is required to survive.
