Lanús plays with a focus on defensive solidity and quick transitions through a 5-4-1. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before catching the opposition on the break. The team relies on a compact formation that makes it hard for opponents to find space between the lines.

Ruiz Diaz sits between the posts to command the area. The back five consists of Aguirrez at the center, with Veron and Gimenez acting as the wide center-backs. Hernandez and Sosa operate as wing backs, tasked to cover the entire flank and provide width. This unit can drop into a low block to deny space, with the centre-backs ready to win the second ball or clear the lines when under heavy pressure.

The midfield functions as a four-man midfield to protect the back five. Rigau and Wullf sit in the center to shield the defense and fight for possession in the middle third. They work to intercept passes and win the second ball to start transitions. Peña and Badilla occupy the wide areas, looking to track back and support the wing backs while being ready to carry the ball forward when the team wins it back high up the pitch.

Up front, Varela acts as the lone striker to lead the line. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push up or make runs in behind the defensive line. When the team moves into transition, the attack relies on Varela to find space or link up play with the advancing wing backs. The wide players, Peña and Badilla, look to spread wide and deliver crosses or cut inside to support the central presence in the box.

One major advantage for Lanús is the extreme compactness when defending in a low block. The narrow defensive block makes it very difficult for the opposition to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to hit in behind on the transition, using the width provided by Hernandez and Sosa to stretch the defence once the ball is won.

This 5-4-1 formation provides a very sturdy defensive foundation. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession, allowing Lanús to sit deep and counter at pace.
