Lanús relies on a counter attacking identity using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition on the break. The goal is to maintain a compact block and frustrate the opponent.

Ruiz Diaz guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back five is composed of Aguirrez, Gimenez, and Veron in the center, with Nager and Hernandez acting as the wide defenders. Aguirrez holds the central spot to command the line and win headers. Veron and Gimenez provide cover to the left and right of the middle. Nager and Hernandez play as attacking wing backs to provide width when the team wins the ball, but they must track back to maintain a narrow defensive block. This unit works together to squeeze the space and deny the turn to attackers.

A four man midfield operates in front of the defense. Rigau and Wullf act as the central pairing to shield the back line and win the second ball. They connect the defensive and attacking lines by moving the ball forward. Peña and Badilla operate on the flanks to provide width and press the opposition wide players. Peña and Badilla must drop back to help the wing backs when defending. Rigau and Wullf are tasked to carry the ball forward or find the feet of Varela during transitions.

The attacking side relies on Varela as a lone striker. Varela stays high to pin the last defender and works to hold up the ball for the midfield. When the team wins the ball, the players look to hit in behind the opposition defense. Hernandez and Nager push high to offer wide outlets, while Peña and Badilla look to drive forward to support the central area. The focus is to attack in transition and use the runs in behind created by the movement of the forwards.

Lanús gains a major advantage through extreme compactness when defending. The 5-4-1 lineup makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines or find space in the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition when the ball is won back. The team can quickly switch play from one side to the other using the wide players.

This formation is a defensive tool designed to soak up pressure and strike on the counter. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their defense.
