Oblak stays between the posts to command the area. The back four features Jonny on the right and Grimaldo on the left, acting as full backs who can overlap when needed. In the middle, Gimenez and Lucas form a central pairing, with Gimenez often acting as a ball playing defender to start attacks. This defensive unit works together to maintain a mid-block, ensuring they do not leave too much space behind the line.

The midfield is a four man line designed to control the center of the pitch. Rodri acts as the single pivot to shield the defence, while Partey works alongside him to drive forward with the ball. Koke and Saul occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Koke, the captain (C), uses his passing range to recycle possession and find teammates, while Saul can make late runs into the box to support the attack.

Up front, the team utilizes two forwards in a partnership. Griezmann plays as a second striker in the hole, often dropping deep to link up play and create space. Diego Costa acts as a target man to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. This combination allows the team to attack in combinations, using Griezmann to lay it off for Diego Costa or the oncoming midfielders to run past the defence.

One major advantage of this Atlético lineup is the ability to press in a mid-block, making it difficult for opponents to play through the lines.
