Newcastle Football Formation
Starting Lineup
NICK (POPE) · TINO (LIVRAMENTO) · MALICK (THIAW) · SVEN (BOTMAN) · LEWIS (HALL) · ALADJI (BAMBA) · DANILO (SANTOS) · JOELINTON · HARVEY (BARNES) · YOANE (WISSA) · NICK (WOLTEMADE)Newcastle aims to play a high press and vertical style of football using a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack the opposition with speed in transition. The Newcastle lineup looks to stretch the defence by using wide attackers and energetic midfielders to create chances.
Nick operates as the goalkeeper, acting as the last line of defence. The back line uses a flat back four to defend zonally. Tino plays as the right back to provide width while Lewis acts as the left back to cover the flank. Malick and Sven form the central pair, where Malick plays as a ball playing defender and Sven focuses on covering space behind the line. This unit works to hold the line and squeeze the space to keep the team compact.
The midfield is a three man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. Danilo works as the pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Aladji operates in the half space to connect the defensive and attacking lines and carry the ball forward. Joelinton plays as the advanced attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box and press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch.
Newcastle uses three attackers across the front to pressure the opposition back line. Yoane and Harvey act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the full backs. Nick plays as a pressing centre-forward who looks to find the feet of the striker and hold up the ball. The attackers work to hit in behind on the transition and make runs in behind the defenders to catch them out of position.
One tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Tino and Lewis push up to support the wingers. This creates constant pressure in the final third and makes it difficult for the opposition to build out from the back.
This 4-3-3 is designed to dominate games through high intensity and quick vertical movements. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back or those that leave space behind their defensive line.
