Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Oblak · Romero · Hancko · Grimaldo · Llorente · Hujmland · Álvarez · Lookman · Barrios · Baena · PubillAtlético aims to be defensively solid and vertical, operating within a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space and hit opponents on the break with quick transitions. The team focuses on staying compact to deny the turn of opposition attackers and relies on a coordinated press to win the ball high up the pitch.
Jan Oblak sits between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back three consists of Hancko, Romero, and Pubill, who work as a cohesive unit. Hancko acts as the left centre-back to cover wide areas, while Romero and Pubill provide strength in the middle to win the second ball. They often play out from the back to start attacks, keeping a high line to compress the midfield.
The midfield functions as a five man unit with a central trio and wide players. Barrios acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Hujmland connects the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward into the half spaces. Baena plays as the attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to play through the lines and find the feet of the forwards. Grimaldo and Llorente provide the width, with Grimaldo often acting as an attacking wing back to whip it in from the left while Llorente covers the right flank.
In the final third, Atlético uses two forwards in a partnership. Lookman and Álvarez work together to press from the front and pin the last defender. Lookman often looks to cut inside to create space, while Álvarez works to find pockets of space between the lines. The formation is designed to create runs in behind and use the wide players to stretch the defence. When attacking, the team looks to combine in tight spaces or send quick balls to the strikers to break the line.
One major advantage for Atlético is the ability to press high in coordinated waves using the front three and Baena. The presence of Grimaldo and Llorente allows for wide overloads from attacking wing backs, which forces the opposition to defend deep. This setup also provides great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
This 3-5-2 formation is a tough unit that prioritizes defensive stability and quick transitions. It is best suited for games against possession based teams where Atlético can sit deep and counter at pace.
